Dr. Eike Mrosek

  • School education in the Black Forest Mountains and the U.S.A.
  • Medical School at the University of Freiburg from 1995 - 2001
  • Foundation and leadership of the Department of Endurance Sports and Triathlon at the Institute for Sports and Sport Science at the University of Freiburg (General College Sports)
  • Three years of research in the field of experimental joint surgery
  • Clinical education in Zurich (internal medicine with Prof. Oelz) and in Tuttlingen (general surgery and anaesthesiology)
  • Currently working in the Department for Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital Freiburg

My parents are enthusiastic mountaineers. My family has lived in Bad Reichenhall in the Berchtesgaden Alps and at the Chiemsee for many years. My parents lead me onto my first trips into the mountains and initiated the infatuation called "mountaineering". I started with extreme endurance sports a little later which has deeply influenced my following mountaineering activities.

  • At the age of 12 to 18 several courses in rock and ice at the Youth Department of the German Alpine Club
  • First 4000 m peaks with friends from the Black Forest at the age of 15
  • Excessive endurance sports with 15 years: triathlon, marathon (first Marathon with 15 years), mountain races.
  • With 18 years skiing instructor-education (basic level) at Association of German Skiing Instructors
  • With 19 years first participation at a triathlon over the IRONMAN distance
  • Continuation and extension of mountaineering-activity in rock and especially ice, as well as in triathlons (e.g. Ironman-WC in Hawaii 1994 and 1998)
  • Volcano climbing in Polynesia
  • Climb of the most 4000 m peaks of the Alps on routes of all difficulties in rock and ice, and ski descents of several ice walls with Swiss mountain comrades
  • Organization and medical care of an Andes expedition of the German Alpine Club, Section Freiburg in the year 2000 (climbs of several 5000 m peaks and Alpamayo and Huascaran, 6768m)

As a mountaineer and endurance athlete, attempting Mount Everest is a major challenge for which I face with the utmost respect. Also from the medical point of view, the project is highly interesting and probably more than "only an experience beyond the limit of human ability".
